I'm completely neutral in this case. First time I heard
Nightwish was some time around when "Once" was released, back in 2004. However, they didn't make an impact on me then, although I thought "Nemo" was a very good song
(it still is) and the name Nightwish got stuck in my mind somehow.
I didn't start to listen to them as a fan until "Dark Passion Play" was released. And it was not because the change of female vocalist. For some reason, I had heard the news about Tarja getting fired and I just thought
"Okay, so what?" I didn't get sad or anything like that. Later on I happened to hear "Amaranth" on the radio and thought
"Hell yeah, what a good song". Then when I learned that it was NW, I realized
"Aha, this must be the new singer". During this time, or maybe earlier, I went through that period in life when you find yourself and your real personality. I found myself as a metalhead, and it was because of that I started to listen to NW among many other metalbands, because I got trapped by the music itself. However, this is another story which not belongs here.
But you know what I mean, right? I heard NW for the first time many years ago and I liked them, but didn't become a huge fan of them until 2007. Anette just suddenly was the one behind the microphone. Therefore I never realized and understood what such an icon Tarja was. I never saw her departure as a complete tragedy, which I guess many people did and still do today.
To be honest, I actually think Tarja is quite overrated. For many people, she's an angel. But for me, she's just a singer. Classically trained, absolutely, but still just a singer. I can't find out what is so special with her.
Anette is the opposite. She's underrated as hell. But since a lot of people still, and probably always will, compare her with Tarja and are so blinded by hate, the world doesn't realize what such a huge pipe she possesses. Which is a shame.
I don't prefer one of them more than the other. Both Tarja and Anette are awesome vocalists with different singing styles. Two different styles that I love and I have a great admiration for both of them. I love Anettes work with NW and I really enjoy Tarjas solo stuff. I need to say that I think Tarja suits better as a solo artist than as frontwoman in a band. She looks much more comfortable now. But this is just my opinion.
Furthermore, I think all these die hard Tarja-fans and Anette-haters are freaking pathetic. It's not Anette's fault that she replaced Tarja; the guys in NW chosed her among thousands of applicants because they wanted her. So if you don't like her, blame them instead. Tarja won't come back to NW, neither the guys or us real fans wants her to. I actually think Tarja doesn't want to return either. Why would she like to come back, now when she has a successful solocareer which she apparently puts her heart and soul into?
People, if you like Tarja, go listen to her solo stuff and stop harassing on Anette. It's not necessary at all. It doesn't mean that I don't respect your opinions though, because what would the world be like if everyone had the same opinions? What I'm just trying to say is that I think these fan wars are stupid and immature as hell. I agree with this smart guy, or girl, here;
The best statement ever written I think. And I'm not alone, just look how many thumbs up he's got.
